Happy New Year

December 31, 2009

Our wish to you for a very Happy New Year!

Cody and I had a great time doing a little mini photo shoot the other day. He needed some updated photos (new haircut and all!) I am a proud Mom and think I have a pretty good looking son. He is out of town right now…I sure miss him!

Last year at this time Cody and I were in Oregon along with my Mom and Dad (Jonathan was working on a cruise and was in South America.) We went to Oregon to spend Christmas with our family. My Dad’s side of the family and a lot of my Mom’s side of the family both live in Oregon-mostly around the Eugene area with some in Portland. We flew into Portland on Christmas Eve. It was snowing. We taxied into the airport on a runway covered in snow-it was magnificent. I’m not sure my Dad was feeling the same way knowing he had a two hour drive south to Eugene. We stopped and had our Christmas Eve meal at the local Burger King and headed on down to Eugene. I think my Dad was having second thoughts about renting a car instead of an SUV! On our second day there at our traditional family get together at the pizza parlor our cousin Danny offered to take Cody snowboarding at Willamette Pass Ski Resort. This was Cody’s first time snowboarding and he caught on no problem. After a few runs down the bunny slope he headed up the ski lift with our cousins that have been snowboarding all their lives. I stayed in the ski lodge with my hot chocolate most of the time-with my novice skiing skills I didn’t want to slow the boys down. On our last day in Oregon, the University of Oregon Ducks were playing-my entire family are Duck fans and if you live in Eugene it is a pretty good chance you are too! Cody even caught Duck fever when we were there and came home with a Duck jacket of his own. It is always sad when we have to leave and we always look forward to going back. We actually went back this past summer-I will share that trip soon!

Have I mentioned that I love the snow and live in Florida. No? Hmmmm

That’s Cody to the right of the ski lift-looking pretty relaxed! It was pretty cold out there!
Just a few of Cody and I with our cousin Mason (the STAR of the family!) and that’s me with my most wonderful cousin Amber! This one’s for the fam in Oregon…

Christmas: at the Roots

December 26, 2009

This Christmas was a little different-we were all home together-at our actual home…not on a cruise ship or celebrating on another day or apart! As a family we have learned that every single Christmas is special no matter how we celebrate or where we celebrate and every single Christmas for the last five years has been different (makes me wonder what Christmas 2010 has in store for us-except I don’t think I am quite ready to think about Christmas 2010 quite yet!)  So for this day, our day was rooted in everything we cherish-each other, tradition, being together, laughing, faith and hope. I hope that your Christmas was beautiful and if you haven’t celebrated yet here’s wishing you a most wonderful one!

It was a good turkey!Cody breaking his Christmas Cracker from the UK (courtesy of Alice’s parents) and wearing the “mandatory” crown!Jonathan with his crown on and one of the jokes from the Christmas Cracker…Thanks for taking this shot of us Cody!

Merry Christmas 2009

December 25, 2009

Well Matteo has definitely been the STAR of my blog lately and I am certainly happy about that! Ashlei and I were just talking about how we hadn’t seen each other in three years and have now seen each other twice in the last month. That is something great that photography has brought into my life-new friends and re-kindled old friends! On the day that I shot the Whitehurst family (Ashlei’s family) I also got some great shots of Ashlei’s new little family-her, her husband and little, adorable, precious Matteo!

Wishing the Jimenez Family a very Merry Christmas!

Last week I had a little preview of our trip to Colorado in January 2009. We went to visit our friends Carlos and Jennifer and spent most of our time in the snow (and in case you don’t know-I LOVE the snow.) We went skiing (well, I skied and the boys snowboarded) twice and then spent a day at the Rocky Mountain National Park sledding. We actually skied/snowboarded at night and it really was magical-at times when I was up on the mountain I would just stop and look out amongst the mountains, snow, stars and that big huge sky and take it all in. It was breathtaking-I really could have just stayed up there-and given how I was skiing and the size of the mountain it was definitely a thought-I think Jonathan, Cody and Carlos made it down the mountain five times in the time it took Jennifer and I to get down it once! We also ate at Rubios a lot (it’s one of our favorites and we don’t have one here in Florida.) So last week I shared a few pictures from our trip to Winter Park Ski Resort…this week I thought I would show you a shot from our drive to Winter Park (so glad I wasn’t driving-thanks for getting us there safe Carlos!) and then our day of sledding at Rocky Mountain National Park.

It was a beautiful day for a family photo shoot. A few weeks ago I did a photo shoot of the new addition to this family, Matteo, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to photograph the entire family. So Kit, Julie, Ian, Ross, Ashlei, Felipe and Matteo all gathered together and weathered the 85 degree December Florida weather. We had a perfect day and the Whitehurst’s have an absolutely beautiful home on the lake in Merritt Island so we had the perfect backdrop for some great family photos. And I absolutely LOVE their adirondack chairs-so cute-as soon as I saw them I knew I had to use them! Matteo’s great-grandma and great-grandpa showed up so we captured a few special memories for them. What a wonderful family and what a fabulous day!

Baking with the Roots

December 14, 2009

The baking has begun and is actually just about done. It is a tradition in our home to bake quite a bit of goodies during Christmas time and share with our friends. One of my favorites is the cut-out cookies we make (otherwise known as sugar cookies, but I always called them cut out cookies and it seems to have stuck.) I don’t even know where the recipe I have came from except that I got it from my Mom years ago and it is the one she used when I was growing up. It’s a good one. I thought I would share it with you:

Cut Out Cookies
2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
4 tsp. milk
2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
Cream shortening, sugar, vanilla and egg. Stir in milk. Sift dry ingredients and blend into cream mixture. Cut the dough and chill dough for 1 hour.
After the dough has chilled, roll out and cut out your favorite holiday shapes and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Cody and Alice ended up with a little bit of flour on them and made their own “signature” cookies
